First Conference on Public Archaeology

View of downtown Pensacola.

REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED; SEE BELOW FOR HOW TO JOIN REMOTELY!

The First Conference on Public Archaeology is taking place on September 22-23, 2023, in Pensacola, Florida!

This meeting will be hosted by the Florida Public Archaeology Network and is intended to provide a dedicated space for public-minded archaeologists and cultural heritage practitioners to share their experiences and expertise. Over two days, we plan to host a series of workshops, panels, round-tables, and special events geared toward addressing some of the most pressing issues in the discipline, including:

  • Diversifying professional and avocational representation
  • Public archaeology and the Section 106 process
  • Community science and heritage site stewardship
  • Climate impacts to tangible and intangible heritage resources
  • Harnessing digital advances for outreach and education
  • Working in schools and engaging with educators

While the First Conference on Public Archaeology will forego the traditional paper format, our hope is that discussion, hands-on participation, and professional networking will foster advances and new directions in the discipline.

Keynote Speaker and Speech Transcript

It is our great pleasure to announce that Dr. Barbara J. Little will be the First Conference on Public Archaeology’s keynote speaker, presenting “Public Archaeology: Where are We Going?” Dr. Little will be speaking at the Museum of Commerce (201 Zaragoza Street, Pensacola) on Friday, September 22, at 9:00am.

Dr. Little is an Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at the University of Maryland, College Park. She works in public archaeology on issues of public outreach and involvement and on the public relevance of archaeology and heritage. Her edited book, Public Benefits of Archaeology, published by the University Press of Florida in 2002, is a touchstone volume for the practice of public archaeology. Her recent books explore intersections among civic engagement, social justice, and archaeology. She co-authored Archaeology, Heritage and Civic Engagement: Working toward the Public Good with Dr. Paul A. Shackel. Her most recent book, out this year with the University of Alabama Press, is Bending Archaeology toward Social Justice: Transformational Action for Positive Peace. The book examines the strengths of community-based archaeology and promotes the power of inquiry and imagination to destabilize violence and build peace.
